THE HISTORY OF THE CHÂTEAU DE L’ESTANG WINE ESTATE

Wine estate near Bordeaux, Château de l'Estang has had a rich history since the 18th century. In turn, the different owners of the castle have invested in embellishing it and developing exceptional wines. Do not hesitate to contact your winery for more information.

At the origin of the domain

Château de l'Estang has a long history. Originally, in the 18th century, it was a small farm that can still be seen at the entrance to the property. In the 19th century, the owner of the castle was in charge of a large estate and built a "manor". This one, equipped with rifles and cannons, was unfortunately destroyed in battle, along with another nearby castle. Fragments of the wall still remain today. Near the parking lot, a well-preserved statue of the Virgin, built in 1891, still tells the story of the glory of years gone by.

The next owner built the present castle and its main buildings on top of a hill. The chateau is surrounded by vineyards and a forest, with two sources. The whole represents a place conducive to culture.

The post-war years

After World War II, the Filliol family bought the Château de l'Estang. As the winery was far from the city center and there were no water and electricity facilities in the park at that time, Mr. Filliol and his son built their own supply system to water from a source. Lit by a kerosene lamp at night, they began an arduous entrepreneurial process by creating this beautiful vineyard.

Château de l'Estang in the 1990s

Twenty years later, in the spring of 1990, a hovering helicopter slowly landed on the castle lawn. Mr. Schouartz, successful builder, was surprised at the beauty of the estate. He said he wanted to build a top-notch wine estate in Castillon. After having inspected the property from the sky and found that the surroundings of the Château de l'Estang were remarkable, he expressed his intention to acquire it. Not wishing to sell, but faced with the fact that his son does not want to continue the activity, Mr. Filliol finally ceded his domain. Mr. Schouartz then invested 10 million francs to build a modern wine cellar and introduce a full set of state-of-the-art equipment to produce exceptional wines.

In 1993, Mr. Bocquillon, from a former noble Parisian family, bought the castle. The quality of the wine has been continuously improved. The estate has won numerous awards in famous wine review competitions.

The current era

Now run by Chinese investors, this large and beautiful property has been equipped with a vat room equipped with the latest technological advances in winemaking in thermoregulated stainless steel vats. An aging cellar allows the different wines to assert themselves and develop their subtle aromas in oak barrels before being bottled.

Based in Saint-Genès-de-Castillon, near Bordeaux and Libourne, the Château de l'Estang has developed a bed and breakfast business. Also discover the estate's online wine store!
